Write a developed paragraph  answering the following prompt:
Atticus says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" (101). What does he mean? Explain the significance of this statement. Use textual evidence from the novel to support your answer.

With the developed paragraph, I'd like you to use the ACES paragraph format.

  1. The significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win." is that the south lost the civil war but by representing the man he can win by not being as cruel as it once was. An example is when Atticus said, " This time we aren't fighting the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this , no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is still our town." I think this is an example because many will criticize and ridicule their family for representing the African-American man. In conclusion Atticus is doing the right thing by representing him and even though he may be ridiculed he stands by his decision and won't let others affect him doing the right thing.

  2. The significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" is that people as racist. For hundreds of years prior to the story, black people have been kicked when they're down; Maycomb is a racist city in the south, which is the most racist part of the United States. Most of the white residents still use words like nigger. A quote which exemplifies the ignorance of the people is this one: "nigger-lover is just one of those terms that... ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody." This is just a common place insult that people use, showing that the people are racists. So, the Finch family was beat a hundred years prior, because people still have the prejudices one hundred years later.

  3. why Atticuses quote was so important is that because that he's saying that he's representing himself and standing up for who he is as African American in south after the civil war. He also stands for his thoughts and ideas and will not let anyone else change that or affect him

  4. The significance of "simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" is even though the Civil War didn't abolish racism, that doesn't mean Atticus shouldn't try and help, despite what others have to say about it. Atticus is not only doing this for the man he's representing and also for himself, but to set an example for Scout and Jem.

    1. Good start. Paragraph needs a bit more development and analysis.

  5. The significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" is Atticus knows that he is not going to win the trial. The tradition of racism is strong in Maycomb that a black man accused of rape by a white woman is enough. Atticus knows the right thing to do. He knows he is going to do his best, even if he can't win. Atticus tries to explain it to Scout saying "This time we aren't fighting for the Yankees, we're fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they're still our friends and this is our home." (Ch 9) Atticus knows that this is causing trouble in Maycomb. But he continues to defend Tom Robinson, because he knows that it is the right thing to do. He also sets a good example to his children about courage and to do what they need to do no matter how hard it is.

  6. Atticus means he was set up to lose. If it’s a case by jury, most jurors would have the common hate against people just based on skin color. Atticus believes in what he’s doing, but it would be impossible to change the way 12 people think based on a few days. He shows he has the unorthodox opinion in this situation, saying “‘This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home’”(102). He still cares about his friends, even if they disagree with him entirely, and even if the South was awfully racist at the time, it’s still a place that they call home. For Atticus, he knows it’s ok for friends to have differing beliefs, it’s just more difficult for him because he has to try to convince his friends to win the trial.

  7. he means that even when you are going to loose you still try because its the right thing to do. This statement is significant because scout and her brother feel like there father is being bullied or licked as the book said at school.

  8. The quote from Atticus "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" means that even if you got no chance of winnen you don't give up until the end couse that is when it really comes down to it, where you win or you lose and feel good you tried you hardest and didn't give up.

  9. The significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" shows that racism has gone on for a long time, and by him representing an African- American person might make people turn on him. His quote shows that people have tried to stand up for that race before, but got figuratively or literally shot down because of it. Atticus is putting some positive thoughts into this, thinking "Just because it didn't work then, doesn't mean it wont work now."

  10. When Atticus says: ""Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win"" He is referring to the times of great prejudice in the plantations, in slave trade, and in all forms of Black Judgement. When Atticus is talking about Tom Robinson, Scout asks him if they will win and he simply replies "No, honey." As if it is entirely impossible, like blatant fact. This clearly shows a lack of hope in Atticus's client. He knows based on the events of the past, that he cannot win. Despite the fact that Scout is too young to understand, he wants her to know the truth of this scenario. That truth being the truth of southern america's harsh past.

  11. The significance of "simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" Atticus means that just because the civil war did not abolish racism douse not mean they have to quit and by representing Tom Robinson symbolizes fighting agenst slavery.

  12. The significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win." is that Atticus wants to try his hardest to keep equal values between human beings. He knows that being in Maycomb, an establishment located in one of the most racist states in the U.S., the odds are against him in the trial of Tom Robinson due to the bias of most people there. "n*****-lover is just one of those terms that... ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody."
You aren't really a n*****-lover, then, are you?"
"I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... I'm hard put, sometimes—baby, it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you."(Ch 9) He's explaining to Scout that people talk down to him like it's a bad thing to see black people as equal. Although most people are against him, he knows that it's best to try his hardest to win the case for the love of equality.

  13. the significance of "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win". Atticus knows that he most likely wont win but if he didn't try then he wouldn't be doing what his mind and soul knew was right. Racism in Maycomb is strong, so if a black male is accused of a crime and goes to trial, everyone knows who will win. Atticus wants to show his children to stand up for themselves when their mind and soul says its the right thing. If Atticus didn't stand up for Tom Robinson then he couldn't ask his children to respect him.

  14. When Atticus says, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”(101), he means that just because the odds are not in your favor doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth a shot. Especially with something that you really care about. In Atticus’s situation the people around him are already against his beliefs and the person he is defending, so the odds aren’t great but he does it because he believes it’s the right thing to do. When Atticus has this talk with Scout he is teaching her a very valuable lesson. This is apparent when Scout goes to find Cecil Jacobs and almosts fights him but remembers the lesson her dad taught her. She will most certainly use this throughout the rest of her life and Scout’s understanding of the trial is somewhat better, which makes this part in the story even more significant. - Clay Hawkeswood

  15. Atticus says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started this is no reason for us not to try to win" He is meaning when the civil war was over, and all the slaves were free, but still not treated in that way. He is stating that he will try to win the trial, even if he does, he knows he might not win."The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town..." This clearly explains why he is trying to win.
